American Airlines just announced some changes to their reward program, both for the short term and the long term.
In the short term, they are continuing the pattern that most airlines are following: basing your elite status on your level of spend, primarily the cost of tickets. No matter how often you fly, you won’t achieve elite status as quickly as if you had bought pricier tickets.
In the long term, they will be establishing a new elite level, Platinum Pro in January 27. According to the details, this status will fall right under Executive, and ahead of Platinum and Gold. Previously, you needed to reach double the Elite Qualifying Miles (EQMs) to go from Platinum to Executive: 50,000 to 100,000 miles. Now, there’s a breakpoint at 75,000 miles. That’s a bit more reasonable for people who can’t quite cross the Executive threshhold.
